Ensiferum “Victory Songs“
Die Wikinger sind wieder los! Die fünf Finnen hatten mit ihren beiden Kracher-Alben „Ensiferum“ und „Iron“ sowie ihren druckvollen Live-Auftritten schon längst das europäische Festland und den Rest der Welt erobert, als anno 2004 der frühere Lead-Sänger Jari Mäenpää die Band verliess und sein Nebenprojekt Wintersun zum Hauptprojekt machte. Der neue Frontmann Petri Lindroos gab seinen Einstand auf der verkorksten und seltsam unmotivierten „Dragonheads“, die 2006 erschien und bei den Fans nicht gerade für Begeisterungsstürme sorgte. Spätestens jetzt begannen sich einige Anhänger Sorgen um die Band zu machen, man lechzte nach neuem Material und wünschte sich das Viking-Quintett in alter Stärke zurück. 2007 schliesslich, ganze drei Jahre nach „Iron“, erlösten die Finnen ihre grosse Fanschar. Mit dem neuen Album „Victory Songs“ zeigen die Nordmänner, dass der Sängerwechsel nicht das Ende der Band bedeutet.
Ein Sturm tobt durch die Lande, peitschender Regen prasselt erbarmungslos auf die Erde nieder, Blitz und Donner verängstigen Mensch und Tier. Das gelungene, stimmige Intro trägt einen in Gedanken direkt nach Finnland, in den hohen rauen Norden und bereitet einen auf die Schlacht vor. Mit dem nachfolgenden „Blood is the Price of Glory“ geht’s mit ganz viel Pathos ab ins Kampfgetümmel, so wie wir Ensiferum kennen und lieben. Ganze Wände von brachialen Double Base-Parts und nicht minder wuchtigen Riffs tun sich vor uns auf und Lindroos schreit sich, wie sein Vorgänger, fast die Seele aus dem Leib. Auch was die Komposition der Songs anbelangt, kehren die Finnen zu alter Genialität zurück. Die Mannen aus dem hohen Norden beschallen uns mit eingängigen Melodien, die man auch noch nach dem einen oder anderen Bier problemlos wiedererkennt, „Ahti“ zum Beispiel lädt wunderbar zum Mitgrölen ein. Für genug Abwechslung sorgen Tempowechsel sowie die gesangliche Variation, denn neben den obligaten Männerchören gibt es auch clean gesungene Passagen zu hören. Zu einer reichhaltigen Viking-Metal-Mahlzeit gehören auch Folk-Elemente, und so gibt es auch auf Ensiferums neustem Streich Banjo, Zwölf-Seiten-Gitarre, Schamanen-Trommeln und ein paar finnische Sätze zu geniessen. Der epische Finisher „Victory Song“ schliesst das hervorragend produzierte, meisterliche Album gekonnt ab. Zuerst wird musikalisch noch einmal das Intro aufgegriffen, um sozusagen den Kreis zu schliessen, und danach beginnt die alles entscheidende Schlacht, die natürlich siegreich für die Wikinger ausgeht. Auch Ensiferum stehen mit ihrem neuen Silberling als Gewinner dar. Mit „Victory Songs“, das sich textlich Genre-typisch um grosse, mutige Krieger und die nordische Mythologie dreht, melden sich die fünf Finnen nach dem missratenen „Dragonheads“ eindrucksvoll zurück und arbeiten weiter daran, zu einer lebenden Legende zu werden … falls sie das nicht schon sind.
Ensiferum are back! Ab in den nächsten Laden, „Victory Songs“ kaufen, Trinkhörner auffüllen und ab in die Schlacht!
